PlayStation 5 has officially launched worldwide, but it may take some time for entirely new next-generation experiences to arrive. The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, said the company ” believes in generations “, but a number of blockbuster SS5 including Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, and maybe God of War Ragnarok, will be titled cross-gen and other Sony executives have hinted that PS4 support will continue for at least another three years. Jim Ryan reiterated this idea in a new interview with the Russian news agency TASS.
” There are approximately 114 million PS4s in the world, the number of those who move [initially to PS5], if you keep that in mind, will be a small number. For us, the PS4 community will remain incredibly important for 2020. 2021 and 2022 “.
So, if cross-gen is going to be important for a long time to come, when are the true next-gen PS5 experiences coming? Things that wouldn’t even be imaginable on PS4? According to Ryan, they will not arrive this year or even next: 2022 will be the time when the power of PS5 will be really harnessed.
” History will tell you that it’s in the second or third year that developers will take the real leap. Developers generally need some time to familiarize themselves [with the hardware]. But it’s probably in 2022 that you will see some things. wonderful as in 2015 [or] 2016 for the previous generation. “
Again, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any PS5 exclusives before then – we already have Demon’s Souls, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is coming. But it seems that the truly mind-blowing experiences are still a long way off.
